Winter Reveals

This old barn, along with two other buildings is probably no more than 20 yards from a major highway I take at least twice a week but until a few weeks ago I had never seen it before.  That's because this area of Deep East Texas is a heavily forested vegetation-filled region and for about ten months out of the year the foliage hides these old beauties from the likes of me.

Reminiscent of Days Gone By

This little barn about seven miles from my home and near the community of Martinsville, Texas, is still working today.  It is one of the few wood pitched-roof barns remaining in this area.

A Christmas Barn

This little barn, which is within the city limits of Timpson, Texas, and only about two blocks from downtown (however, I must tell you, Timpson has a population of 1,155), actually sports a Christmas wreath 365 days of the year.  I don't know the significance of that, but anytime I feel like I need a little Christmas in my life, I hop in my truck and drive the 15 miles to Timpson to get a little taste of Christmas!  Happy Holidays to all my fellow Barn Charmers.

My Favorite Barn

This is my favorite and most photographed barn.  It is abut a half mile down the road, and when I was a girl, it was known as the Kelly Dairy Barn.  Ava Kelly was one of my best friends.  I understand she now lives in Houston but I haven't seen her since 1955.  I wonder if she even still remembers me!

East Point, Texas

I spotted this charmer in the community of East Point on a recent road trip to North Central Texas.  Sitting out on the Texas prairie it is unique to this area in that it appears to have glass windows and even a door with glass panes that matches the red roof.  I'm sure the door is a modern improvement although the windows seem to be original.

Another view of the same barn from a different angle.  East Point was settled in the 1870s.  By 1896 its one-teacher school had 86 students.  In 2000 the total population was 40.

Saint Jo, Texas

This is the only stone barn I've ever seen in Texas, although I'm sure there may be some down in the Hill Country in the areas settled by German immigrants.  I found this one last summer on a road trip in Saint Jo, Texas, in the central part of the state just south of the Red River in Montague County.  It was just one block from the main highway in downtown St. Jo (population, 977) with residences on either side and across the street.

Aunt Ruth's Barn

As a child, and even as an adult, I loved going to visit my Aunt Ruth, who lived but just a couple of miles from us.  She always had a good pie in the kitchen, a soft, loving voice, and plenty of time to visit.  After returning to Texas last year I happened to notice one day that someone was at Aunt Ruth's place and the gate was unlocked.  I drove down the road to the house and found my cousin, one of her two surviving children (Aunt Ruth has been gone about 20 years now).  We had a nice visit, the first in about 40 years, and I told him how much I'd like to come back and photograph Aunt Ruth's old barn.  He told me I'd better hurry because he had plans to tear it down.  After all, it was just hanging by a haystring anyway and the tin patching was also beginning to look a little frail.  The next weekend I returned and took many pictures.  I haven't been back but I assume it's gone by now.  I'm glad I got to see it one more time.  I love the vine covering the exterior and the natural air conditioning.

Log Barn

This is the only log barn I've ever seen in this area so I believe it to be VERY old.  

From all indications, it is still being used.
