Corsicana Library Mural

This huge mural on the side of the Corsicana, Texas, Library, is a tribute to the now razed Carnegie Library which was built in that city in 1904.  The original cost was $25,000, which put it in the middle range of the 32 Carnegie Libraries constructed in Texas.  Even though the building was demolished in 1967 it lives on in this beautiful mural painted in 1998 by Brad Smith, a resident of Burleson, Texas.

The detail in the lower left, much like a cartouche found in certain paintings, is called "The Book Return."  The boy and the dog are life-sized.

Galveston City Cemetery

City cemetery on Galveston Island, Texas, has survived many hurricanes in its past.  

It has some wonderful headstones and many crypts awaiting a photographer's lens.

Haying Season

Buckskins

If I had a horse I'd want it to be a buckskin!  Sorry but I couldn't pick my favorite of these two photos.

I happened along a small group of paints and buckskins in Erath County, North Central Texas, on my recent road trip.

Boating at Kemah

Kemah is a small town on Galveston Bay 25 miles north of Galveston Island.

Water sports are popular tourist attractions.

Kemah is an Indian word meaning "Wind in my face."

Ritz Theater - McKinney,. Texas

The Ritz Theater opened in downtown McKinney across the square from the courthouse in 1928.  

Stage plays was the original venue until movies became popular.  

The original neon sign is long gone.

Today the Ritz is a small shopping mall with eclectic boutique shops.

Layland Museum/Carnegie Library - Cleburne, Tx

I'm always astounded at the beauty of Carnegie Libraries.

In 1902 members of the Cleburne, Texas, Women's Club met with New York industrialist and benefactor Andrew S. Carnegie to secure funds for a building of a local library.  This beautiful Beaux-Arts and Classical Revival style library was completed in 1905.  It housed a theater on the second floor.

Now the Layland Museum, the Carnegie Library in Cleburne served as the local public library until 1978.
